Over the years I feel like I have used just about every Anti-Virus and firewall software out there. I've learned one thing about firewalls, don't use them, software firewalls that is. You should only use the firewall that is on a router or modem. It is standard now to have a firewall in every router, if you try and find one without one you'll be looking for awhile. Software firewalls are just an added level of security you really don't need. If you have Vista or Windows 7, then I would STRONGLY suggest to just use the windows firewall and windows defender. They are the best software solutions for firewalls. Norton has gotten exponentially worse since 2004, McAfee is popular because its always included in software packages or with new services (such as new DSL or Cable ISPs), and ZoneAlarm is one of the best of the lot, but its just overkill and can really hinder performance for gaming. AVG Free or Windows Security Essentials is the only Anti-Virus you should need on top of a router's firewall. Both are free, MS Security Essentials is a good amount smaller and stays more in the background which is why I use that. Also I would suggest you use Firefox or Chrome to ensure security while web browsing and downloading. Internet Explorer always has security issues and is attacked the most due to its high market share. That should be everything you need to be secure and its all FREE!! Last thing, I don't know but i'm assuming you're using XP. If thats the case you should spend that money on a Windows 7 upgrade instead of any firewall software. XP is ancient in terms of operating systems, its approaching 10 years since its release and is horribly plagued with security holes and attacks still to this day. The most secure software upgrade you can do is upgrade the OS. PS this should be moved to Tech Help

I use my router firewall but it really doesn't do *cussword*. I buy the Defender-Pro from wallmart. Best firewall/antivirus out there. Updates almost every day but I don't update it everyday. It's VERY user friendly. I have been using it for about 3 years now and it is 100% better then any free one and/or norton. Norton is really bad. and rediculasly over priced. Defender-pro is only 20 bucks for 1 year and if you buy it at wallmart and not online then you get to activate it on 3 separate comps. I recommend it to everyone I know. I have only had one person who has complain. But that person can't read english or spanish.(she's mexican....wife's mother) That is hardly defender-pros fault. *edit get the 5-1. The 20-1 has too much useless stuff.

IF you are going to use anti viruses such as AVG, make sure that its not blacklisted for any type of video game. As some games wont run for some odd reason dealing with the anti virus. The one I was recommended by a friend that has helped me the most is going to be NOD 32 by ESET. Its PC friendly(and game friendly) due to processing speed and memory. If you are looking for a free anti virus that is almost to NOd 32 (protection wise) is going to be Avast. But same thing goes here for a warning, make sure that its not blacklisted. Avast might be as protective as NOD 32, but its a good processor eater. If your processing speed is low, might not suggest Avast. I should know. :P http://www.eset.com/ http://www.avast.com/index Good luck.

If you want even more security but also the possibilities for 'minor' annoyances (in the form of whitelisting websites) then I would look into additional FireFox addons if you decide to use FireFox as your web browser. The best one being AdBlock which is fairly unobtrusive and helps you to block ads, banners and others on websites which could be security concerns. The only real thing you need to setup on this is to subscribe to adblocking list that gets frequently updated. I think a prompt automatically appears now after you install the addon so it's not that much of a setup. The next one would be noscript, which takes a bit of setup but helps for potential JavaScript exploits and whatnot. You would have to add websites that you want to enable JavaScript on to it's whitelist, which is easy as it's a few simple clicks on your status bar at the bottom of the screen but can get repetitive when visiting new websites frequently. The last one would be FlashBlock, which blocks any and all flash on all websites until you add their URLs to it's whitelist. IMO, this one isn't as needed and I mostly use it to avoid the annoying auto-play music on some websites. All of these you can find at addons.mozilla.org The only other thing I'd mention would be that Microsoft Security Essentials is a great free anti-virus program, I'm really impressed with it after switching from Avast!.

If they have a mouse gesture addon I might consider trying it out. Edit: Oh, they do! Haha. https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/lfkgmnnajiljnolcgolmmgnecgldgeld
